14-time major champion Tiger Woods has been hired by Beacon Land Development to design a ten-hole par three course for the new Jack’s Bay Resort in the Bahamas. The appointment continues a theme for Woods, who started in design with the creation of a short-game facility at his own home on Jupiter Island in Florida, a project that for a few years was the only completed assignment listed on his company website. His next project was the failed Tiger Woods Dubai development, which collapsed after only 6 or 7 holes were built and apparently paid Tiger north of $50 Million for the design and promotion. He has since finished 18-hole full courses at Bluejack National and Diamante (El Cardonal Course), as well as a short 10-hole course at Bluejack National and another 12-hole short course planned for the Diamante project (Oasis short course).
The Jack’s Bay project is named “The Playgrounds” and according to an announcement on the Tiger Woods Design website, the course traces the stunning shoreline and “features a flexible layout where holes range from 70 to 165 yards. Consistent with the values of TGR Design, The Playgrounds will offer a variety of shots and playing scenarios to challenge seasoned players, while also being fun and welcoming for newcomers to the game. Pure enjoyment and playability are at the forefront of the design in order to promote multigenerational, relaxed experiences for families and friends to come together and enjoy world-class golf in the breathtaking Bahamian setting.”
Whether a sign of the development times, or a market preference for shorter courses and, perhaps, smaller signature design fees, Tiger’s company should be well practiced at creating short courses by the time this project kicks off and the site does look appealing and well suited to a fun, playable par three layout. Six of the holes either head along the coastline or feature greens with uninterrupted Sea backdrops. The course is sure to prove popular with guests and residents of the upmarket estate, which is located just south of Rock Sound on the island of Eleuthera. Jack’s Bay will apparently also feature a full 18-hole course down the track. According to various media reports, Beau Welling will oversee the design of the full course with Tiger Woods acting as a consultant. Welling acted as a ghost-designer for Tiger’s company at Bluejack National, which was also developed by Beacon Land Development.
