After several years on the market, the stunning Ocean Dunes golf course on King Island’s West Coast has been sold to a Melbourne consortium.

Announcing the sale in a media release published on the Ocean Dunes website, Chairman Andrew Mitchell confirmed the group has plans to not only build a new clubhouse but also to add accommodation on site as well. To date, there has been no lodging at Ocean Dunes with guests either staying at the local Currie hotel or elsewhere on the island.

While the media release made no mention of the sale price and provided scant detail on the purchasers, it did confirm they were Melbourne based and suggested an established association with King Island. Rumour has it that the group includes a prominent Melbourne restauranteur.

King Island Mayor Julie Arnold told The Advocate Newspaper that she and the island were “thrilled” with the news and that, "It's always good news when someone comes in an invests in King Island.

"Certainly from the island's point of view, I think really we're on the point of booming.

"I think this COVID-19 back step has perhaps hidden the good things that are happening... but this reinforces that the potential is there and people need to get in to grab that.

Cape Wickham on King Island has enjoyed its busiest golf season since opening, with built-up demand over the last two years contributing to solid forward bookings through to May and into next summer.

The Ocean Dunes golf course was opened in 2016, and wis currently ranked the 6th best public access golf course in Australia according to both The Golf Course Guide and Golf Australia Magazine.

King Island Golf is ready for take-off – Ocean Dunes Sold

Ocean Dunes golf course on King Island has been sold to a Melbourne based consortium.

Chairman of the Ocean Dunes Board, Andrew Mitchell confirmed that the new consortium intends to develop a new clubhouse and much needed accommodation on the course. This is not only great news for Ocean Dunes but for King Island as well.

The new consortium brings vast experience to the project and will expand the already popular golfing destination into one of the premium ‘must do’ golf and leisure hotspots in the country. The current Board and investors have taken the project as far as we could, congratulate the new consortium on their purchase and look forward to watching the exciting next stage develop.

When asked about the sale price Mitchell explained, ”as there is a strict confidentiality clause in the contract, the sale price and terms of the sale are not to be disclosed. The Board also thanks Paul Mason Real Estate for negotiating the sale of the golf course”.

The King Island Hotel remains on the market with Paul Mason Real Estate.

Mitchell went on say that “we have never seen the course in as good a condition as it is now.

Ocean Dunes and King Island is definitely open for business. With hopefully the worst of the impacts of the pandemic over last two years behind us, we can look forward for golfers to come and play quality links golf”.
