Whitinsville Golf Club

USA, Massachusetts
6.4 (7)
Designer: Donald Ross
Course Opened: 1925

From the club website:

Whitinsville Golf Club first opened for play in 1925. Construction of the course was undertaken in 1923 at the order of E. Kent Swift, the Chief Executive of Whitins Machine Works. At the time the largest manufacturer of textile machinery in the world. At approximately the same time another nine hole course was being constructed in nearby Southbridge. The architect for that project was contacted and at first expressed little interest. When Mr. Swift offered him the price of an eighteen hole course design, he quickly changed his mind and work was underway. The architect was none other than the legendary Donald Ross. Money talks!

Whitinsville Golf Club has gained a reputation over the years into what is today considered one of the top nine hole course's in the country. The course has changed little from it's ordinal design. You will quickly notice that it retains many of the hallmarks traits of vintage Donald Ross design. From the smallish, mounded greens with treacherous sloping, unobstructed run-up areas to the front of most greens, strategically placed fairway bunkering and challenging par 3's. The course has wide-open fairways and hilly terrain. Numerous sand bunkers have been incorporated into the course design, and water hazards come into play on many holes. The ninth hole, a 446-yard, par 4, features a tumbling plateau fairway

Whitinsville is a 9 hole layout that plays to a maximum 18 hole distance of 6,427 yards for a par 70 course rating of 71.1 and a slope rating of 133. Many sets of tees are present to suit players of all abilities.

Whitinsville has garnered many honors throughout the years and continues to impress. It was recently chosen as the number two nine hole course in the country by Golf Digest.

The ninth hole has been recognized as one of the top 100 holes in the country by Golf Magazine. Ryder Cup captain, Ben Crenshaw referred to Whitinsville as a "hidden Ross gem", while selecting the closing hole as one of the best 18 designed by the renowned architect.
