In Volume 3 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that.
“Formed in 1884 by a small group of Scots immigrants, Oakhurst was the oldest formalized golf club in America, but when the founders died the course simply grew over, and remained in pasture until its nine holes were rebuilt (by hand) in 1994. Maintained by gang mowers and sheep, it probably plays much the same as it did 120 years ago, if you use the replica gutty balls and vintage hickory-shafted clubs provided for guest play. As a stroke play exercise it is highly frustrating, but as an exercise in understanding that the thrill of golf is not a function of how far you hit the ball but how well, it cannot be surpassed. For a match with a friend it is as exciting as can be, and the view of the valley from Mr. Keller’s back yard has to be one of the best in golf, as is the short par-4 9th hole playing back up the hill.“
The Oakhurst Links Course at White Sulphar Springs received a score of 5 out of 10 from Tom Doak.
