An expensive public course facility in Westchester County, the Pound Ridge golf course was designed by legendary architect Pete Dye and first opened for play in 2008. The course continues a recent trend for Pete Dye, of focusing on the extravgent and dramatic over the strategic and challenging. Here one of his problems was the rocky and unfriendly nature of the topography, together with the fact the site is a touch cramped for this kind of golf experience. Nonetheless, this is a beautiful course to look at although several holes are either a little extreme or offer only one genuine method of attack. Some of the internal fairway shapes are quite severe, while the green contours are also dramatically arranged.
Those who enjoy Dye's modern courses, are sure to love Pound Ridge, his first design in the state of New York. Others might well wonder how good this place would have been with a more subdued approach to design, perhaps something along the lines of The Golf Club, rather than Whistling Straits.
