In Volume 2 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that:
“The new No. 9 course is the former Pinehurst National, recently purchased by the resort. When it opened, they said Mr. Nicklaus had tried to capture the flavor of the greens at Pinehurst No. 2, but there is no resemblance; the greens here are terraced, to the point that golfers who can’t hit high approach shots will struggle. [Perhaps the shapers should have actually gone over to see the famous greens they were supposed to be imitating?] The reachable par-5 10th is the one hole I still remember.
Pinehurst No. 9 received a score of 5 out of 10 from Tom Doak, and two scores of 5 out of 10 from his co-authors.
