In Volume 3 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that.
“A mountain retreat for well-to-do Southerners [including the late Bobby Jones], Highlands is a billy-goat layout in immaculate condition that zealously guards its privacy. In places it becomes a bit too narrow, especially on the front nine where the combination of sideslope and trees rivals the difficulty of The Olympic Club, but the back nine widens out a bit to better holes. There are some excellent long two-shotters, like the sidehill 5th and the dogleg 10th which is pinched by a mountain stream in the landing area, such that you have to flirt with the water off the tee if you want to reach the elevated green in regulation. However, the greens are not as complex as Ross’ best work, and the short overall length of the course will cause some good players to dismiss it. Don’t believe them.“
The Highlands Country Club received a score of 6 out of 10 from Tom Doak and two scores of 6 out of 10 from of his co-authors.
