In Volume 2 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that:

“For many years the CC of NC was the putative next-best course in Pinehurst, and a staple of the GOLF DIGEST Top 100 list, thanks to its combination of sandy soil and a glut of heroic water holes in the closing stretch. How times change! Even the members acknowledge that the last hole is a mess – a short par-5 that twists left across a finger of lake before finishing uphill to a green by the dumpsters at the back of the clubhouse."

Country Club of North Carolina received a score of 5 out of 10 from Tom Doak, and scores of 5 and 6 from two of his co-authors.
