Designed by Robert Trent Jones and Cabell Robinson at the height of their Spanish popularity, Los Naranjos is yet another residential/resort Costa del Sol course that occupies decent ground but fails to reach any great golfing heights. The front nine here is nicely rolling and blessed with an impressive mountain backdrop, while the back nine is much flatter and its fairways cut through rows of low set palms.
Most of the high points are on the front side, the 1st and 9th are both up and down affairs, the 9th working a little bit better as is features an attractive cross valley approach into a sharply angled green. On the back nine the most visually impressive hole is the 18th, which is pure theater as its green is cut by a cascading creek running diagonally across the fairway. Given the hole pushes 600 yards and the spongy fairway grasses and built-up putting target make it seem even longer, it's unlikely many members take on the water here with their second shot, but it's a fun hole to play nonetheless.
Sadly much of the remaining golf carries neither the visual or strategic interest of these few highlights.
