Low profile and unassuming public access course in Songdo, close to Incheon, Orange Dunes was built on reclaimed land and for about a quarter the cost of the nearby Jack Nicklaus GCK. The company behind the project was Orange Engineering, a golf course construction company who convinced the developer of the port at Songdo to issue it a short-term lease to develop golf on a disused part of the reclaimed peninsula. The course was essentially designed by the CEO and softened by his brother Chairman, who wanted the greens with less undulation to enable green fee players to get round easier.
No golf in Korea is cheap, and this is no exception, but it is quite fun and bouncy and those who don't take the game seriously are sure to enjoy their round. About every hole has a bunker or green or fairway shape that leaves you shaking your head, but the better moments make the round well worth it. The attempt to build a quasi-dunescape across the reclaimed site led to some interesting shapes, some funky shots and a few areas where you can use trajectory and skill to bound your ball into an apparently inaccessible area. The par threes are probably the strength of the course, but for Korea the fact the clubhouse is unassuming and the course is a little rough around the edges make it a pleasant break from the norm.
