Designed by Robert Grimsdell in the 1960s, The River Club in Sandton near Johannesburg is a fine, lightly played, members-only club that boasts some of the best golf land in Gauteng.
Here you regularly drive up or down slopes, with some excellent approach shots then played into sizeable greens, many of which were raised during a 1990s upgrade. The biggest failing of the course is the fairway bunkering, which is strategically located but shallow and barely a test at all for decent golfers.
Highlights include the likes of the 3rd – 5th, 7th, 11th, 12th and 14th which are all good. The 18th is a strong closer as well, the hole played over a rise and then across a pond, as is the cross pond 16th.
Without setting the world on fire, The River Club is a nice, understated golf experience with a real touch of class.
