Built upon a 345-acre property that is part of the historic Balcarres Estate, Dumbarnie Links opened in May 2020 and was designed by Ryder Cup player Clive Clark. The course is located in the Kingdom of Fife, with unobstructed views over the Firth of Forth, a 10-mile wide stretch of water, offering views of Muirfield, North Berwick and Edinburgh.
Less than half an hour from St Andrews, the course was shaped to play as a bouncy links and features pot bunkers and manufactured dunes. The water of Largo Bay and the estuary can be seen from at least 14 of the holes. The course design features a mixture of tees that play down an escarpment towards the water. Some of these tees sitting on top of the escarpment have views straight into the water and are as much as 60 feet above their respective fairways.
According to the construction team at Landscapes Unlimited who built the course, Dumbarnie Links took only five months to construct and involved around 600,000 cubic metres of moved earth. More than 600 dunes were man-made, and 142 bunkers built as a mix of small revetted traps and larger, ‘natural’ looking hazards.
