Terrace Downs on the South Island of New Zealand, is a stunning modern resort that enjoys spectacular mountain backdrops but a drab resort style golf course designed by architect Sid Puddicombe. Of biggest concern here, aside from the unremarkable holes, is the bunkering, which is randomly arranged, both in terms of its positioning and difficulty. Some traps, like the right side of the 9th green, are six feet deep, while others are mere scrapes that you can almost putt out of. Worse of all is the fairway bunkering on the early par fours, the traps around the 5th to 8th are horrifically out of place and built with ugly, unnatural and unstrategic mounding.
Terrace Downs does enjoy good turf conditions during its short season and, as mentioned, the scenery is superb. Some of the closing holes, such as 15 and 17, are also nice, but overall this is a pretty poor effort on a promising parcel of land.
