The course was designed by golfing legend Sir Bob Charles and is modeled on the Augusta National, home of the US Masters and was the venue for the 1998 New Zealand Open.

Formosa is listed in The Finest Golf Clubs of the World and covers an area of 440 acres. The course has panoramic views of Waiheke Island and Rangitoto from its clifftop and coastal fairways, along which hundreds of pohutukawa trees and palms have been planted. Sixteen of the course's holes have northerly views of the Hauraki Gulf and its many islands. The 11th to the 16th holes run along a clifftop overlooking the shoreline.

The course caters for golfers of every ability. The practice facilities include an all weather under cover driving range.

Designed by internationally renowned golfing professional, Bob Charles, the course features 18 holes of sensational golf. Demanding enough for the skilled golfer it is also suitable for a relaxed, friendly, or corporate challenge, and may be played year round. The course is one of the longest courses in New Zealand at over 6600 metres (7200 yards) from the professional tees and set against the stunning backdrop of Hauraki Gulf, the course features the first couch grass fairways in this country, providing a durable and attractive all year playing surface. At the Formosa Golf Resort, 16 of the 18 holes provide delightful water views and at over 190 hectares, is established on an area twice that of a usual golf club.
