A short drive from the stunning UNESCO-listed town of Sienna, the La Bagnaia golf course was designed by Robert Trent Jones Jr and forms part of the beautiful La Bagnaia Golf & Spa Resort, managed by the upscale Curio by Hilton group. Set on either side of a country road, the course occupies some steep terrain but is known for its attractive Tuscan setting, rural outlooks and a spacious routing spread across and through a series of hills and valleys.
While the 18 holes are built upon a 130 hectare property, the larger resort footprint is almost ten times that size and includes spa facilities as well as a cluster of restored farmhouse buildings converted into luxury lodgings. The hotel buildings date back many centuries, and were spectacularly restored and modernized by the current owners.
Among the more memorable holes at La Bagnaia are the left bending 3rd and 8th holes, the former a par five played around a lake and the latter a nasty short par four whose approach is into an elevated ledge green that feels only a few paces deep.
On the back nine, the 10th stands out for its downhill tee shot and cross-creek approach, while the 13th is a tempting par five that virtually horseshoes around a large lake toward an attractive green that welcomes the bouncing approach shot. The narrow, angled short par four 16th is also fun, especially for those long enough to be able to drive near bunkers that guard the slim line green site.
With superb facilities and a charming setting in the heart of Tuscany, La Bagnaia comes recommended for those looking to plan an Italian break that marries golf with sightseeing, culture and fantastic cuisine.
