Ballyliffen Golf Club - Old Links

Ireland, NW Ireland
5.5 (6)
Course Opened: 1973

In Volume 1 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that.

“Ballyliffin’s Old course has the most wrinkled links fairways I’ve ever seen; if you drove a buggy down the first hole you’d probably become seasick before you reached the green. It was a charming, small 5800 yard course when Nick Faldo came to visit in the early 1990’s, and his fondness for it put the course on the map.

There were more dunes adjacent to the course, and when the E.U. environmental regulations were first proposed, the enterprising Pat Ruddy approached this club and several others to warn them if they didn’t build a course right away, they might never be allowed to build in the dunes again. Glashedy is the result. Unfortunately, it’s built to championship length even though they’re never going to hold a championship in this remote outpost. It’s also built for buggies and the people who like to drive them; the sharp downhill par-3 with a pond on the left was a total turn-off. But at least it’s not an undeveloped stretch of dunes. .”

The Old Links at Ballyliffen received a score of 4 out of 10 from Tom Doak and 5 out of 10 from two of his co-authors. The Glashedy Course scored a 5 out of 10.
