Bintan Lagoon Resort - Baker-Finch Woodland Course

Indonesia, Bintan
5.5 (4)
Course Opened: 1996

Established in the late 1990s, but already looking quite dated, the Bintan Lagoon Resort features two courses designed principally by Nicklaus Design; the Nicklaus Sea View Course and the Baker-Finch Woodland Course which was co-designed by Australian champion Ian Baker-Finch.

Despite occupying some interesting forestland, and at times getting right down near the South China Sea, neither of these courses is particularly special with the most memorable feature here being the bizarre split green on the Nicklaus course, the actual putting surface at the 13th is sliced in two by a yard-wide creek!

While the Nicklaus Course gets more play, the Baker-Finch layout probably has the best golf land and is a more interesting test thanks to its diverse group of holes and the complete absence of water and gimmicky greens. The opening tee shot here sets the tone, the landing area is tight and slopes to the right with only precisely struck balls setting up a decent approach shot. Throughout the rest of the course the tee shots are more demanding that the wide and open fairways on the Nicklaus Course. Aside from the crazy 13th green, the Sea View layout is best remembered for the par three 12th which runs alongside the beach and features a green surrounded by rocks and sea. It's not a great hole, but for a resort of this caliber is probably the highlight.
