Grindavíkur Golf Club was founded in 1981, on May 14.
Jóhann Möller had a summer house in Staðarhverfi and had prepared 4 fairways and holes on the banks. He strongly encouraged the locals to come and play and to start a golf club and move out the pens. The course is now (2004) a 13-hole course, five of which are on the banks and eight are north of the highway and stretch pleasantly into the lava to the east.
In 2009, work began on expanding the course to 18 holes according to drawings by Hannes Þorsteinsson and under the supervision of course manager Bjarna Hannesson. The official opening of the 18-hole Húsatóftarvallar was held with an opening tournament on July 28, 2012.
In January 2011, renovations were also undertaken on residential property owned by the golf club with the aim of housing the future GG golf lodge. The pavilion was officially opened on July 1, 2012.
