Located south of Munich, near the disappointing Golf Club Beuerberg course also by Donald Harradine, the St Eurach Golf & Leisure Club is built upon a much better site and is a far more interesting layout than its newer neighbor. The holes here run over hills, through subtle valleys and many feature glorious views of the magnificent Bavarian Alps. Unfortunately a large number are quite tame, and often built with long, narrow demanding fairways and difficult plateau green sites. Despite the terrain changes, there is little subtlety in design with many bits too difficult and others too simple and without much strategic interest. Often you just drive out to a flat, dull fairway and then hit straight uphill into an elevated green site. The Colt-style bunkering, which is rugged and at times quite deep is fairly sound.
The fact the golf here is much better than Beuerberg, which is only five minutes away, is less a ringing endorsement of this track and more an indictment on the state of golf in this region. The bare bones at St Eurach are decent, but we would love to see a comprehensive overhaul of this property. It has the potential to be one of Germany's best courses.
