Though founded in 1893, Royal Norwich Golf Club members play on a European Golf Design course that opened in 2019.
The course was designed by Ross McMurray from EGD, and was the result of a decision by the club to relocate from Hellesdon to a plot of land in Weston Longville. Once occupied by the Weston Park Golf Club, the new home of Royal Norwich was comprehensively rebuilt by McMurray and European Golf Design and formally opened for play in September 2019, after Professional golfer Ian Poulter had struck the ceremonial opening tee shot.
Though some of the previous hole corridors were incorporated into the new layout, the routing was completely overhauled and the golf extended into an adjoining property. Designer McMurray said of the site, “It’s not often you get to work with a site of this quality, so we didn’t want to create a course that yells ‘here’s me’ and imposes itself on the landscape. We designed a course that golfers would want to come back and play the next day and would be fun for everyone, whatever their standard.”
