In Volume 1 of The Confidential Guide to Golf Courses, Tom Doak published that.
“Park poured his heart and soul and money into this design. In some ways, it was ahead of its time (especially as the car wasn’t prevalent then and this course is well west of London). Conversely, in many ways, it now serves as a ‘how to’ in designing a course with minimal man-made contrivances (i.e. bunkers) and a cunning set of green complexes. It opened with less than 25 bunkers and today it only has 13 but you’d never know it based on how well positioned they are. A strategic gem, it deserves to be better known than it is and one day it might be, especially if they gain permission to cut down the trees and undergrowth on the common ground that stunt the wind and hinder long views over the country side.”
Huntercombe Golf Club received scores of 7 out of 10 and 6 out of 10 from two of Tom Doak’s co-authors.
