Shelly Beach Golf Club

Australia, NSW, Hunter Valley

Course Opened: 1957

Shelly Beach Golf Club is located on the New South Wales Central Coast, and is situated at the eastern end of Shelly Beach Road, on the gentle undulating hills overlooking Shelly Beach, a leisurely 60 minute drive from Sydney.

The Golf Club was formed in 1929 and has been the leading golf club on the Central Coast for more than 79 years.

The evolution of Shelly Beach Golf Club from its modest beginnings to its present state has been well documented over the years. It is nonetheless interesting for newcomers to the Club to learn that Tuggerah Lakes Golf Course was originally a 9 hole course built in Killarney Vale on the site which subsequently housed Killarney Vale Community Hospital. A clubhouse was also built and the golf links were officially opened in 1929 by the late Cr. A.L. Taylor, president of Erina Shire.

The official formation of Shelly Beach Golf Club took place on September 1, 1930 with A.L. Taylor being elected President and subscriptions being set at 10/6 for men and 5/- for associates.

The club continued to operate on the original site at Killarney Vale until 1954 when the increasing club membership and rapid population growth in The Entrance / Long Jetty area, induced directors to seek a site suitable for an 18 hole championship course.

The land on which the Tuggerah Lakes Golf Course now stands had long been considered the ideal site but the fact that this land was crown land precluded any possibility of a deal between the Golf Club and the NSW Government Lands Department. It was discovered however, that if the land could be transferred from the Lands Department to Wyong Shire Council under trusteeship, the council could in turn lease the land to the Golf Club.

Wyong Shire Council did everything possible to facilitate matters and following complicated negotiations between the Golf Club, Wyong shire Council and the NSW Lands Department, the lease of land, home to our present TLGC, was secured by the Club on 18 August 1952.

The rest, as they say, is history but that is not to diminish the foresight, vision and hard work of many involved in the fruition of those dreams of a full 18 holes course which was finally ready for official opening on 3 November 1957.
