The Huntingdale Golf Club is a private members club. Visitors from Interstate or Overseas are welcome during certain periods of the week. Such visitors will need to be members of a recognised golf club, with a current membership identification card or a letter of introduction from the home club. One of Australia’s most famous tournament venue’s, Huntingdale was designed by an Englishman, Charles Alison, who never actually set foot on the site. Built on a narrow stretch of former swampland the routing here is the least interesting of all the Melbourne Sandbelt courses as holes run predominantly North/South and without the tremendous variety found at neighbouring clubs.

As immaculately presented as any Sandbelt course in Spring and Summer, for many years the members suffered through soggy winters with the continued drainage problems forcing the club to undertake a radical upgrade in the 1990’s. The changes, made by Newton, Grant and Spencer, were the most sweeping of any classic course in Victoria and while the year round playability has improved, the upgrade in many ways divided the club.

The biggest disappointment with the new layout is that the best par three’s, four’s and five’s have been diminished and much of the course’s character lost forever. The most noticeable loss is the short par three 15^th, which had been regarded as one of our finest and most intricate classical one shotters, but was flattened and replaced by a longer, uninspiring resort style hole.

Huntingdale may never have been the best course on the Sandbelt but it was always a great challenge and those who played the former course in its Masters time summer glory will remember it as a wonderful experience. There are still enough solid holes here to make the course well worth a look but this grand old lady of Australian golf unfortunately “ain’t what she used to be.”
