In 1927 construction of the Links commenced with the first 12 Holes being laid out. The Club was fortunate in securing the services of Harry Alexander, the well known greenkeeper and professional. He designed the course and supervised the whole work in laying out the original 12 Holes.
The 12 Holes were completed in 1928 and the course officially opened on June 23rd of that year. The full 18 Holes were completed and opened in April, 1930.
The course is bounded on the west by the Plenty River which meanders through the 2nd and 3rd Holes adding to the beauty of the course. From the higher parts of the course where several beautiful holes have been cut through the natural flora and fauna, fine panoramic views can be enjoyed of the surrounding countryside. On clear days views of the City skyline are easily visible when playing from the 11th hole through to the 14th hole.
In 1968 a major alteration to the layout of the course was completed. The objective being to reduce the number of uphill holes, thus necessitating the construction of several new holes, new greens and new tees. This project proved successful with the layout as it stands today offering members and visitors a challenging layout, but importantly, each hole offering a different and unique challenge because of the changes in slope and terrain.
After several years of severe drought in the late 1990’s and early 2000’s, increasing pressure on the Club’s water supply drawn from the nearby Yarra River required a change in strategy to “drought proof” the course in future years. During the height of summer the lack of available public water caused the course to dry out and large cracks appeared on many fairways. A major undertaking began in 2005/06 when the Club resolved to plant santa ana couch stolons on the fairways. Each year 5 to 6 holes were completed and the projected was largely completed by 2010. By the summer of 2011/12 the condition of the course had improved markedly to the point members were being rewarded for their loyalty and now enjoyed playing on a golf course comparable to the very best courses in the northern suburbs of Melbourne.
