Course Opened: 1913

Short but well presented golf club in the eastern suburbs of Melbourne, Box Hill's history is inextricably linked to that of clubs like Huntingdale and Eastern who were formed out of a membership pool that included this club as well. Memberships are available at Box Hill, and the club remains a popular choice for golfers in the eastern corridor.

With a rich history, Box Hill Golf Club is one of the oldest golf courses in Melbourne

  • 1892: Origins in the Surrey Hills Golf Club, stretching out over dairy farms and unfenced areas in land between Mont Albert Station and Whitehorse Road
  • 1895: male and female membership reaches more than 60; first clubhouse located in the railway gatekeepers hours on land leased from the railways
  • 1896: Surrey Hills Golf Club holds its first Open event, which becomes the forerunner to the annual Riversdale Cup event
  • Late 1896: course extended to 18 holes
  • 1899: Adjacent land purchased and a new Clubhouse built
  • November 1906: a public auction of land for housing is held in Mont Albert, including the land where the first hole sat, making the future of the club difficult.
  • 1908: Riversdale Golf Club established by a group of Surrey Hills members leasing out land in East Camberwell.
  • 1909: Surrey Hills Golf Club (at the time known as Middleborough Rd Golf Club) continued at land situated from Albion Road to Whitehorse Road
  • 1912: This land also became subdivided, so a group of members set up a course on the other side of Middleborough Rd, which also later fell to subdivision.
  • May1913: 70 acres of land south of Canterbury Road was acquired and a 9 hole golf course built – Box Hill Golf Club was born
  • 1924: the Club’s Canterbury Road property was also subdivided and a Committee leased some property in Doncaster Road, and laid out an 18 hole course amid the surrounding orchards. The same Committee took over the assets of the Box Hill Golf Club and re-established it at the Doncaster Road site, under the name of Eastern Golf Club as it is known today. Box Hill Golf Club ceased to be an entity at this time.
  • 1933: Box Hill Golf Club was resurrected when Mr J.P.C Wellard started work building “The Box Hill Public Golf Links” on the site of much of today’s front nine
