This West Australian 9-holer has shades of the back nine at Pacific Grove in California, with its uncluttered holes arranged in a single loop through gently moving beach dunes and with pleasant coastal outlooks. The course is a short drive north of Bunbury, and known to locals as the Lakewood Shores golf course.
There was a full 18 holes planned at Binningup along with a greater residential estate, but early on the development struggled. The golf course established a 'cult' like following for the quality of its 9 holes, along with its ‘honesty box’ green fee system and the fact the course was managed – well – by a single green keeper. There are some houses adjacent now, and a small club that plays here regularly, but the holes remain understated, attractive and interesting.
Until it expands Binningup certainly ranks as one of Australia’s best 9-hole courses and is worth a look for those heading south from Perth to Bunbury.
