Rod Whitman is a gifted Canadian golf course shaper, designer and all-round builder. Much of his career has been working with Bill Coore and Ben Crenshaw shaping their golf courses, but he has also created a couple of wonderful layouts of his own – including Blackhawk and Wolf Creek in his home province of Alberta and Cabot Links in Nova Scotia.
Bill Coore has described Rod Whitman as “one of the truly talented golf course designers in our business today” and for the firm he was the man responsible for shaping Friar’s Head into the gem it is today. He also worked with Bill Coore on the vastly underrated Les Chateaux course at Golf de Medoc in France, and helped build Cabot Cliffs for Coore next door to Cabot Links. For Pete Dye he worked on renovations at Crooked Stick and Oak Tree among others.
Rod Whitman isn’t a big name designer, but he does have an ability to personally shape any standard of ground into fun, attractive golf holes. Without the profile of some other talented people in the business, he might work in a co-design situation with a celebrity partner.
