An unheralded South African architect, Mark Muller is the man who designed the Atlantic Beach golf course outside of Cape Town. Atlantic Beach may have been the hardest course to build in all of South Africa, as the development was far too dense and much of the native vegetation was protected and golf prohibited. The result is a rather unique links-like layout that occupies beautifully lumpy ground, in windy surrounds, but with houses or internal OOB areas off the sides of the fairways to swallow balls. The best holes are terrific, and had Muller been given more space and the freedom to cut back some of the native fynbos we have no doubt this would have been a superb golf course.
It would be great to see South African developers using his services for course design work instead of hurriedly and instinctively handing all projects over to the nations many major champions.
