A prolific architect is his home country Canada, Doug Carrick has also built courses in Austria, Scotland and Hungary. In 2009 Carrick was named president of the American Society of Golf Course Architects (ASGCA). Carrick’s courses tend to be boldly shaped, green and more geared toward the resort golfer than the architectural connoisseur. Some of his work on interesting land, such as at Bigwin Island near Muskoka or Greywolf in the Rockies, will disappoint those who feel that he missed an opportunity to leave something more substantial, but they no doubt hold great appeal to the average public course visitor.
Carrick has demonstrated an ability to create good golf courses that are well built, attractive to play and fun for golfers of most abilities. Whether he is an appropriate choice of architect for a specific golf project will depend on several factors.
