A former partner of Harry Colt, Charles Alison's design career started in the United Kingdom but flourished in Asia, specifically Japan where during an early 1930s trip he designed a number of genuine world-class golf courses. These include perennial Top 100 stalwarts like Hirono and the Fuji Course at the Kawana Resort.
Like Alister Mackenzie in Australia, Alison laid the framework for great golf in Japan by designing benchmark courses himself and training some of the men who would continue that legacy and create their own quality courses. Outside Japan his best work includes at County Sligo in Ireland, Milwaukee CC in USA and Glendower in South Africa.
