Arthur Hills

Arthur Hills was a prolific golf course designer, with a large portfolio across the USA and worldwide. He is said to have designed more than 200 new courses, and to have redesigned or renovated more than 150. Some of those redesigned courses were not as well received as others and we know of several that were repaired or redesigned shortly after his work concluded.

The Arthur Hills highlight in our experience is Oitavos Dunes in Portugal, where Hills and Steve Forrest took advantage of some nice dune land and battled some rather inappropriate housing plots to create an interesting layout that has a number of fine individual holes. As good as the course is, Oitavos was a surprise inclusion on the GOLF Magazine World's Top 100 list in 2009, and on several subsequent ranking lists.

Arthur Hills passed away in 2021 at the age of 91.
