Seddiner See Golf & Country Club - South 'Sudplatz' Course

Germany, East Germany, Berlin
5.8 (4)
Course Opened: 1997

The South Course at Seddiner See is an impressive resort style layout built across an expansive paddock outside of Berlin. It was designed by Kyle Phillips while still working for Robert Trent Jones II, and is a dramatic test with large playing areas, huge artistic bunkering and plenty of contoured green sites. There are also lakes, including a large body of water that separates his mirror-image and adjacent closing holes, the 9th and 18th playing around either side of the lake to a large double green that favours a draw on one and a fade on the other.

Generally throughout the round the putting areas are good, with nice collection and chipping areas and subtle putting contours. A couple of the smaller targets are uncomfortable but the bigger greens are very effective. The bunkering on the other hand is hit and miss, mostly the traps are strategically placed but they are overdone on several holes, such as 4 and 8, the latter with a stack of sand hiding both the safe and aggressive lines from the tee. Another issue is the short holes, each of the par threes has a wide but shallow green, they aren't bad holes but the idea seems overused.

At Seddiner See the playing areas are quite vast, even fairways with traps both left and right side are generous which is sensible given the standard of most German's play. The course is fun to play and usually kept in good condition, there are certainly too many bunkers here but there are unlikely to be too many complaints from the membership as Germany doesn't have many good modern courses like this.
