Narooma Golf Club

Australia, NSW, NSW South Coast
6.2 (37)
Designer: John Spencer, Various
Course Opened: 1980

The Narooma Golf Club was immortalized during the 1980’s when Paul Hogan filmed one of his “G’day Mate” Australian commercials from the 3rd green, sitting on cliff tops high above the Pacific Ocean. Along the entire New South Wales south coast this hole remains the standout and one of the most intimidating in the state, with its tiny target perched near the cliff’s edge and at least 100 feet above the swirling surf.

The remaining holes are less exciting although several others on the front nine do use the sloping terrain to offer sweeping views of the Ocean and wonderful Glasshouse Rocks. Remarkably the 5th hole has a burial site, marked with three white crosses, laying only metres from the edge of its green and close to the cliff. Little is known of how the deceased came to be buried within the golf course but ‘Narooma Rumour’ suggests the graves belong to aviation pioneers who crashed on the site when flying from nearby Montague Island. Who knows, perhaps they lost one ball too many to ‘Hogan’s Hole’?

The inland back nine was not built until 1980 and is much less dramatic with holes carved out of the natural bush and winding around a large lake. The course may not be Australia’s best but Narooma’s third hole remains one of its most cherished.
