Royal Port Alfred Golf Club

South Africa, Eastern Cape, Port Alfred
5.8 (5)
Designer: unknown
Course Opened: 1907

The Royal Port Alfred Golf Club is a charming, historic old club whose members enjoy some attractive coastal scenery and decent sloping duneland upon which to enjoy their recreation. The golf course itself is no world-beater, but the landscape is dominated by broad slopes and much of the course is open and exposed to the elements, which always adds to the appeal of a round. The design itself is rustic and basic, the small rudimentary greens work well but the shallow sand scrapes look tired and dated. As for the layout, the early holes that head back and forth over a small rise are underwhelming but the golf across the more dramatic ridges is really fun.

Royal Port Alfred is probably best described as a nice club with a fun course. Most would enjoy a round here but it isn’t the sort of track worth traveling out of your way to find.
