Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club - West Course

South Africa, Gauteng, Johannesburg
5.3 (4)
Designer: Laurie Waters
Course Opened: 1909

The Royal Johannesburg & Kensington Golf Club is a pleasant members club set in the Gauteng highveld and with two solid, if unremarkable, parkland golf courses. The East Course is the stronger and more difficult of the two layouts, but the West has its admirers and was the club’s original track. It opened in 1909 and has been tweaked and upgraded many times during its existence.

The current course is blessed with some nice golf undulations; a few sweeping fairways and attractive green complexes make for an enjoyable day’s golf.

This isn’t world-class golf by any means, but 36 solid holes make this club the envy of most others in South Africa.

From Golf Digest South Africa -

This may be regarded as Royal’s second course, but the West layout would be prized by any golf club in South Africa. It is also more popular than the championship East course with the majority of club members, who love its combination of friendly, yet challenging holes. While there have been some low scores on the West in the annual Joburg Open hosted by the club, this is no pushover, and the layout requires good shot-making skills. It has one of the shortest par 3s in the country, the fifth.
